In 1998, John Rich met up with “Big Kenny” Alphin to form a duo that would soon be known as Big & Rich. Although the group is classified as a country band, they’re debut album, “A Horse Of A Different Color,” features many characteristics that are definitely not country, one example being a rap session with Cowboy Troy, a close friend of the duo. Big & Rich helped establish the “Muzik Mafia,” a group of aspiring performers that would gain ideas from each other in the hopes of coming up with a hit. Rich was undoubtedly the leader of the group because of his past successes as front man for “Lonestar” and soon, he combined with Gretchen Wilson to write “Redneck Woman,” a song that would help Wilson establish herself in the business. Big & Rich also saw success as their hit Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy) was used as the theme song of sorts for the 2004 World Series of Poker on ESPN. Big & Rich are all about the music and it’s a refreshing sound for the country scene in the coming years.
